Central Wood Heating

The benefits of biomass energy can be brought to multiple buildings by connecting them to a central wood energy plant, using a network of hot-water or steam-heat distribution piping. BERC has unique expertise in working with communities and campuses to develop systems that use state-of-the-art wood combustion and advanced district heat piping networks. The central plant can produce cost-effective electricity and cooling, in addition to generating heat and process steam.

BERC works with:
  • Communities
  • Colleges, hospitals, and other institutions
  • Industries
  • Federal, state, and local energy and forestry agencies
  • Economic development agencies
BERC helps to:
  • Evaluate the potential for biomass district energy
  • Provide information on environmental impacts
  • Assemble stakeholder teams and structure projects
  • Create phasing plans and assist in implementation

Widely used in Canada and Europe for many years, district energy is becoming of greater interest in the U.S., particularly when coupled with biomass to reduce fossil fuel use and keep energy dollars in local economies.
