Biomass Energy Project Development
The path to developing a successful biomass energy project is complex. There is no "one size fits all" way to get the job done. BERC and our staff have worked successfully to develop projects, especially in schools, for more than 20 years. We are well aware of the challenges—and the keys to success—for any potential new project:
- There is often a lack of awareness and understanding among potential stakeholders, the public, financing sources, and policy makers.
- Funding options and financial models for developing and operating a system are not well-defined.
- Useful, scientifically supported information is always needed: on economic benefits, environmental benefits and risks, and technology choices.
- Winning "buy-in" from a wide variety of people and organizations is vital, and depends on communication. Identifying and engaging stakeholders is key to success.
In various parts of the country, BERC is working with partners to develop new demonstration projects that show how and where biomass energy can work well, and be cost effective. Working to help develop projects that are especially complex and challenging is a particular specialty for BERC.
