With the generous support of the US Endowment for Forestry and Communities and partial funding from the US Department of Energy, BERC partnered with the University of Tennessee (UT) Office of Bioenergy Programs to develop and populate a searchable database of facilities in the United States and Canada that use biomass energy. The database was part of a larger UT literature review report on the state of the science of wood-to-energy conversion. The database includes facilities using wood for energy in the United States and Canada, and enables stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds to understand the current demand for wood as an energy source and the viability and success of wood-energy projects. The information supports analyses for a variety of purposes, including new market and project development. This funding has also made possible the development of a series of 55 case studies showcasing best-in-class wood-energy systems in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The case studies, which can be accessed from the BERC website or from individual listings within the database, provide evidence that local biomass feedstocks are proven to be a technically and financially viable fuel source. Read press release. Collectively, these three products—the literature review, national database, and case studies—provide a current overview of the state of wood-to-energy science and technology, including both well-established systems using commercialized equipment and technologies that are still under development.
